aches John Taylor and George Gluppe oversee training, which usually takes place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, while we hold a club 5k Chase race once a month, on average. For full details, see the Workouts section.

Partnered with BC Athletics, the club also sponsors two races a year; the Mother's Day Spring Classic 5K in May and the Pinetree Classic Cross-Country 5K/8K trail run in September. We also gather for special outings, such as bike trips and mountain climbing expeditions.

New members are welcome and we'd love to have you join us for any or all activities.

PHOENIX YOUNG GUNS EARN PROVINCIAL SPOTS

Abebe Tinari, Denis Abalakov & Neil Fabbi all shone at a very wet high school district championships this week -- to earn spots in the provincial event in two weeks. Abebe qualified for both the 110 & 400 Phoenix Running Club, Coquitlam, British Columbia
Phoenix Running Club, Coquitlam, British Columbia

Phoenix Running Club

Welcome to the Phoenix website.

We are a Coquitlam-based road, track and trail running club that meets two-to-three times a week for training sessions. We cater to all ages and abilities -- and many of our members compete at a variety of distances and on a range of surfaces throughout the year.

Com hurdles, setting an 18.95 PB in the former & knocking over 6 seconds off his previous best in the latter, clocking 63.89. Meanwhile, Denis qualified in the 3000m & Neil in the 400m. Good luck to all three when they mix it with the cream of British Columbia in a fortnight.

MOTHER'S DAY 5K RESULTS

Congratulations to every Phoenix member that played a part in making the 5k a roaring success this morning -- I think we can all give ourselves a firm pat-on-the-back for a job well done. Meanwhile, special praise should be reserved for Suzanne & Jim T, who put in many hours of hard work behind the scenes to ensure our event got to the start-line in peak condition.

You can see the full list of today's results here & a photo montage from George here.

YOUNG GUNS ABALAKOV & TINARI BLOW RIVALS AWAY

Two of Phoenix's finest young talents, Denis Abalakov & Abebe Tinari, blew the competition away last Friday in the Coquitlam schools district track championships at Bear Creek Park. Denis is now a triple Coquitlam district champion, after scorching to victory in the 3000m, 1500m & 800m -- running 4:27 & 2:08 for the latter two events respectively. Abebe, meanwhile, enjoyed a double-helping of success, showing a clean pair of heels to his rivals in both the 110m & 400m hurdles. On minimal training, Master Tinari clocked a shade over 19-secs for the former & 70-secs dead for the latter. Hot on their heels (literally in the case of the 800m), was another formidable Phoenix colt, Neil Fabbi. Neil racked up 2nd place finishes in the 200m, 400m & 800m (behind Denis), before helping his school's team to victory in the 4x400m relay. All three are likely to be in action in the Fraser Valley Championships next week. The future's so bright for this trio, they'll HAVE to wear shades (a lot)...

QUINTET SHOW PLENTY OF VIGOUR AT V.I.M.

Collectively, it perhaps wasn't their finest hour, but Phoenix racers Suzanne Evans, Emma Morgan, Doug Alward, Dave Whitworth & Kathy Hachey all still made quite an impression during the BMO Vancouver International Marathon on Sunday.

Suzanne ran the half marathon & put in, as ever, a solid display, clocking 1:18:51 to finish 2nd lady & 15th overall. That was just 21-secs slower than her course record time in the April Fool's Half four weeks ago. Emma joined Suzanne in the half & ran 1:37:52 to place 10th (out of 570) in her age group. That was almost (to the second) three minutes quicker than her time in the Fort Langley Half last summer -- & all the more impressive considering Emma has only recently fought back to full fitness following a brace of bad injuries. You can see the official results here.

Doug, meanwhile, ran under injured Davey F's number in the marathon & used the race as a tempo-run, dropping out at the 17-mile mark. He'd blitzed off the blocks, running 38:10 for the first 10k, & maintained something close to that pace for the first 10 miles, before slowing in the heat. For Davey W, who'd run 3:40 in last year's Vancouver Marathon, yesterday was a test of character. Looking to run something close to 3:30 this year, Dave hit half-way on perfect pace, 1:45; however, his bid wilted somewhat in Part II, & he had to dig deep to still finish in a respectable four hours. Kathy, meanwhile, who just 13 days earlier had run the Boston Marathon, guided her tired limbs round in a solid 4:20 -- remarkably, just three minutes slower than her time in Massachusetts! The marathon results are here.

Meanwhile, the prize for most original name-of-the-day went to Orinthal Striggles, of Augusta, Georgia, who was third overall in the half marathon. He flew straight to Vancouver from the heart of a Lemony Snicket novel to compete.

TINARI & BAUER SHINE IN VICTORIA...

Congratulations to Nancy Tinari & Gunther Bauer who flew the Phoenix flag with gusto this morning in the Times-Colonist 10k. In perfect running conditions -- cool & dry with little wind -- the resurgent Nancy blitzed round in 36:35, shaving a second off her time in the Sun Run last weekend to win her age-group & finish 7th lady overall. Gunther, meanwhile, powered his way to a time of 42:37, to finish 2nd of 72 in the M60-69 division. Only the unbeatable Herb Phillips was ahead of him! For a full list of results see here.

O'GRADY BREAKS 4 AT BIG SUR...

While the Times-Colonist 10k was taking place, out in California Kathryn O'Grady was well on her way to conquering the mountainous Big Sur International Marathon in a terrific time of 3:52:03. Kathryn's fine run placed her 6th in the F50-54 division & 512th overall (out of over 3,000 finishers). Click here for the full results.

WOZ IS A WHIZZ AT THE BELL...

Congratulations to Our Warren (McCulloch) who came from behind, in true Dave Wottle style, to snatch third place at a university 800m race in Bellingham yesterday. Whizzard Woz was taking on top-level college athletes 20 years his junior -- & showed he still has the energy of a 21-year-old as he reeled all-but-two of them in down the home straight. For video action of his storming effort, click here.

WEEKEND RACE RESULTS

A belated congratulations to all those who took part in the Sun Run last weekend. Click here to see how the Phoenix members on show fared, here for full race results & here for race photos.

Kudos also to John Atkinson & Kathy Hachey, who both ran the Boston Marathon on Monday. John narrowly missed his target of ducking under 3 hours, clocking 3:01:41, while Kathy ran a very creditable 4:17:58. You can see their splits here (bibs 3509 & 20532).

CHASE RACE RESULTS

Congratulations to everyone who ran the Chase race this morning -- a fine turnout of 17 runners -- on a beautiful spring morning in Mundy Park. I say spring -- it actually felt like the first day of summer! And a big thanks to everyone who helped time/officiate/handicap proceedings. Click here for an Excel spreadsheet/PDF of the results, & here for George's video from the finish line. I'll transfer the results to tables on the Race Results page very soon.

A TALE OF TWO SESSIONS... & THE WARRIOR WHITWORTH

Belated congratulations to Matt Sessions & Dave Whitworth for their efforts in the Diez Vista 50k trail race over the weekend. Matt came home 12th, in a little over five hours, while Dave was 80th, about an hour & a half behind Mr Sessions. Full results are here.

Meanwhile, tonight's track session at Centennial will be 6 x 600m (with 1:30 rest) for the middle-distance runners (speed 20s first) & 10 x 600m for the long-distance guys (who aren't running marathons soon).

FANTASTIC FOUR: RISE OF THE SILVER RACERS

A quartet of thoroughbreds from the Phoenix stable have been in action across Canada this weekend (which also saw the famous British horse-race the Grand National take place -- that'd explain the theme then...) -- & all four galloped to considerable success.

First out of the starting stalls was Nancy Tinari, in the Toronto version of the Harry's Spring Run-off 8k on Saturday morning. Nancy battled the hills of High Park & old training partner Beth Primrose, beating both by about five lengths to finish 5th Overall Female in a time of 30:17. Click on the links for Award Winners and Overall Results.

Closer to home, Doug Alward, Suzanne Evans & Ruby Ferguson all hopped on the Sunshine Coast ferry at the crack of dawn this morning to take part in the April Fool's Run Half Marathon from Gibsons to Sechelt -- & all three had runs to remember. Doug completed a remarkable recovery from a hamstring injury two months ago by scorching to sixth place overall & first in his age group in a time of 1:18:24, pipping the in-form Suzanne by just six seconds! Suzanne was able to console herself with the prize for top overall female. Ruby, meanwhile, knocked almost a minute off her time in February's Historic Half, winning her age group in a time of 1:48:21.   Full results here.

CLUB QUARTET SPRING BACK INTO ACTION IN TIMEX SERIES

John Atkinson, Dave Frilund, Nancy Tinari & Katie Tongue all raced the Spring Classic 5k in Stanley Park yesterday and put in solid performances. John dipped under 18-minutes for the first time, Dave & Nancy were in the 18:20s & Katie was not far behind, placing fourth in her age group in a shade over 22-minutes. See Club ResultsOfficial Results.

PHOENIX FLAPS ITS RACING WINGS OVER ST PADDY'S DAY WEEKEND

Our members were out in force across BC & beyond this weekend to celebrate the famous Irish holiday with a bit of honest competition.

Suzanne Evans was second female home in yesterday's St Patrick's Day 5k in Stanley Park -- though she will argue the competition was not quite so honest; read Nancy Tinari's Racing Reflections to find out more. The results from yesterday's race are here.

Ms Evans was back in action this morning -- this time enjoying some good, honest competition from Nancy --
at the Diva on the Run 8k in Jericho Park, Vancouver. Our ladies took first & second spots at the female-only event, Suzanne letting off some steam in the second half to stretch clear for the victory. See the results here.

Out in Kamloops this morning, Dave Frilund pepped up his Vancouver Marathon training in the River's Spring Run Off 10k, finishing 12th overall & 1st in the M50-54 age group (results). Meanwhile, in Port Moody, club members were out in abundance to support the St Paddy's Day Dash 5k -- both in the race & from the sidelines. The event proved a great success, raising $3800 for the Eagle Ridge Hospital Foundation. Results aren't out yet -- but, once they are, I'll add them. In the meantime, enjoy George's photo montage, here.

Finally, we can let Matt Sessions off for not being quite up with the leaders in Port Moody today -- given that he ran the Chuckanut Mountain 50k Race in Bellingham, Washington (this is the '& beyond') less than 24 hours earlier! Mr Sessions was 47th of nearly 300 competitors. Well done Matt (results).

NANCY & WARREN MASTER HARRY IN STANLEY

Nancy Tinari and Warren McCulloch left their fellow Masters trailing this morning with a pair of powerful performances at the Harry Rosen 8K in Stanley Park.

Nancy improved on her time in the Steveston Icebreaker by almost a minute, running strongly to clock 29:33 (29:35 Gun) & finish 1st Masters Lady, 3rd Female overall & 27th overall. Warren, meanwhile, glided to a new PB of 26:55 (26:57), finishing 12th overall & 1st Master -- and that, less than 24 hours after recording a sub-2-minute 800m in Seattle! Well done to both. Overall results; Age-Group; Photos/Video.

TRACK WIZARD WOZ IS PEERLESS IN SEATTLE

Congratulations to club speedster Warren McCulloch who ran a Masters world class time of 1:59:68 for the 800m at a University of Washington track meet in Seattle this afternoon. Warren, who has excelled over the 10k & half marathon distances in recent years, is focusing on the track and shorter road races this season -- and his dedicated spell of winter training paid its first dividend today (Results); Video/Photos.

His aim now this season is to break the 1:56 mark for the 800m -- which would be a lifetime best at the age of 42... and 20 years after he set the original mark!

CHASE RACE RESULTS

The club's Chase Race returned to Mundy Park for the first time in 2008 this morning -- and there was a decent turnout to mark the occasion. Conditions were a little sticky in places, but generally good-to-firm... and some very respectable times & performances ensued.

A hearty pat-on-the-back to all those that ran -- congratulations to Joe Gargaro for finishing 2nd in the Handicap race! -- and a big thank you to Nancy, Phil & Simrin's mom for their stellar efforts in officiating. Results... Video...

TRIO MAKE THEIR MARK IN MARATHONS...

Congratulations to Suzanne Evans, Kathryn O'Grady and Ruby Ferguson for their excellent efforts on the road this morning.

Suzanne represented Canada in the AT&T Austin Marathon in Texas and was fourth woman overall, running close to her PB with a time of 2:46:14, which earned her 38th place overall and 1st in her age group...           Full results

Meanwhile, Kathyrn and Ruby ran the Historic Half in Fort Langley -- both clocking sub 1hr 50 times and earning top-4 finishes in their age group. Kathryn was 2nd of 101 runners in the F50-59 category, with a time of 1:46:20 (161st of 975 overall), while Ruby was hot on her heels, running 1:49:15 and finishing 4th F50-59 (202nd overall)... NOTE FROM NANCY RE. THIS MORNING'S CHASE...

Today we added almost 400m to the previous Colony Farm Chase Race course to create a route pretty close to exactly 5K.

However, there was some confusion and three people -- Heather, Simrin and Emma -- did some extra distance.  I tried to calculate the times they would have run if they had only run 5K.  However, these times are approximate since I wasn't sure exactly how much extra they had run (or exactly how fast they had covered that extra distance). I didn't calculate a time for Joe because I didn't know how far he ended up running.

My apologies if anything is really off, but I thought it would be better for George to post approximate results than to leave these runners out entirely.  At least they didn't get lost!

Nancy

PHOENIX CREW DO CLUB PROUD IN FIRST HALF

Congratulations to all who ran the First Half this morning. The two outstanding club performances were from Dave Frilund and Matt Sessions; Dave smashing his PB by two minutes (1:21:02) to finish 48th overall and Matt breaking 81 minutes (sneaking ahead of Dave late on)... just eight days after running the Rocky Raccoon 100-mile trail race! Dave also missed out on a podium place in his age group (competing against marathon legend Dick Beardsley, among others) by 0.9 of a second! Meanwhile, John Atkinson also set a 40-sec PB, finishing just ahead of Dave and Matt in 1:20:53. Just as courageous was the effort of young Katie Tongue, who dug deep to still finish second in her age group in a race that didn't go to plan. Well done to Dave W, John T (4th in his age group), Kit, Vic and Kathy on your finishes too -- and thanks to Nancy, Jim, Doug, Dave R. & Joseph for their on-course support!

Club results... (if I've inadvertently missed anyone out, please let me know & I'll update -- thanks).

SESSIONS GOES THE DISTANCE IN TEXAS

A belated congratulations to Matt for his sterling performance in the Rocky Raccoon 100 (mile trail race) last weekend. Matt finished an excellent 10th overall, in a field of 252 starters, clocking a time of just over 18.5 hours. Official results

Matt and I were among a 200-strong audience at the Roundhouse Community Centre last night to witness an inspirational and emotion-charged talk from legendary marathoner Dick Beardsley. Dick, who famously 'Dueled in the Sun' with Alberto Salazar in the 1982 Boston Marathon, opened up about his unorthodox route to marathon glory... and how he has overcome a remarkable series of life challenges since -- including a narcotics addiction. I think we all had a lump in our throats and tears in our eyes as we stood to give him a standing ovation at the finish. Dick will be joining those of us running the First Half tomorrow. Good luck to everyone.

FRILUND & TINARI SHOW THEY'RE STARS ON ICE

Dave F and Nancy did the club proud at the Steveston Icebreaker 8K this morning, with a pair of remarkable performances. Dave smashed his 8k PB to finish second in his age group, while Nancy was not far behind Dave -- comfortably finishing top of the podium in her age group... & on only three days' training a week. And all this on an ice-packed course that was more suited to Olympic speed-skating than road-running! Congratulations guys.

Steveston Ice Breaker 8k results:

33rd:  John Atkinson  --  29.12  (5th in age group)
38th:  Dave  Frilund   --  29.31  (2nd in age group)
49th:  Nancy Tinari    --  30.23  (1st in age group)
